MESQUITE, Texas, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The parents of a Texas 4-year-old whose hair was declared a violation of school dress code said they may remove him from the school. Ian Halprin, a spokesman for Mesquite Independent School District, said Wednesday Taylor Pugh -- who has been receiving one-on-one instruction in the Floyd Elementary School library since his hair was declared a violation of district dress code late last year -- could be placed in in-school suspension or in the school office and lose his individual instruction as early as next week, The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday. The boy's...

MILWAUKIE, Ore. - A man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of sneaking up to women on TriMet buses and cutting their hair, but he is also a person of interest in two unrelated break-ins. TriMet officials said 22-year-old Jared Weston Walter cut the hair - three times in six weeks - of unsuspecting women as they rode on the bus. Officials said he was caught on New Year’s Eve as he rode the No. 33 bus in Milwaukie after a woman called 9-1-1, and in another case, TriMet said he put Super Glue in a woman’s hair. Police also...

Weird ingredients in hair products

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair Jewelry

When it comes to beauty products, sometimes ignorance is bliss. Snake venom, bird droppings, snail serum, cow dung and whale vomit are but a few of the industry's extreme and off-putting ingredients that one might be shocked to know can be slathered about your body. Hair products are no exception to this somewhat creepy phenomenon. Consumers hoping for a hair miracle are willing to pay extra for deep conditioners and conditioning "treatments" that promise an enviable crowning glory -- even when they contain rather odd-seeming ingredients such as placenta, caviar and hemp. Pushing the limits, Hari's, a well-known "celebrity" salon...

Chris Rock's twist on a cultural craving (Rock criticizes black women's hair)

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair Jewelry

'Hair is a woman's glory," says a wise and worldly Maya Angelou in Chris Rock's wonderfully funny, probing coif-doc, Good Hair. A thoughtful examination of African American women - and African American men - and their feelings about follicles, Good Hair has the comedian and acerbic social commentator trekking from Atlanta to New York to India, asking the tough questions of singers, actresses, high schoolers, and kids, moms, dads, and businessfolk. And business it is: Black Americans spend $9 billion annually treating and straightening - or "relaxing" - their hair, and account for 80 percent of the country's hair-product sales,...

‘Good Hair,’ Bad Vibes

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair Jewelry

Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” is funny, very funny, but all the jokes come at the expense of black women. There’s no question that in Good Hair, Chris Rock brings the funny. (Trolling the streets of Los Angeles, peddling “black hair” that no one wants.) There’s no question that he brings the outrage. (Showing a preschooler submitting to the “creamy crack”—a chemical relaxer.) There’s no question that he brings the dirt, getting celebrities to tell it. (Nia Long on her fake hair: “Weave sex is a little awkward.”) But while Rock’s foray into the tangled web of black women and their...

Naked from the Neck Up

For the last several years I’ve been despairing over what to do about my hair. I used to wear it long, but it grew too thin, so I briefly tried wearing it short with a rat tail (remember those?). I quickly decided that this looked ridiculous and clipped it off. Grew it out long again, whacked it off short, back and forth. By the time I hit fifty the top of my head was pretty much a clear landing strip for insects and small birds. I have several friends who shave their heads and all of them are happy with...

Why Michelle's Hair Matters

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair Jewelry

When the First Lady attended a country-music event in July without a single strand of hair falling below her jawline, the blogosphere exploded with outbursts ranging from adoration to vitriol. Things settled down only when her deputy press secretary clarified that there had been no First Haircut. In the aftermath, a didactic post on MichelleObamaWatch.com proclaimed that anyone "familiar with the amazing versatility of black hair" would have known that the new summer look was simply "pinned up." Many Americans have dismissed this hair hubbub as simply more media-driven noise — like the chatter about Michelle Obama's sleeveless dresses, J....

Nairobi great place to get hair done: Clinton

NAIROBI (AFP) – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday gave a ringing endorsement to one feature of the Kenyan capital Nairobi -- its hairdressers. As she launched an 11-day tour of Africa, Clinton noted -- and not with pleasure -- that Americans have long paid close attention to how she wears her hair. "My hairdoes have been the subject of Ph.D. theses, so I want everybody to know that I got a good one in Nairobi," Clinton said in an aside to an economic forum involving some 40 African countries. Besides doing a commendable job on her hair,...

Tokyo scientists find hair loss gene in mice

* Study finds hair loss gene in mice * Gene shared by both mice and humans * Could lead to cure of baldness in humans EXPERIMENTS on mice have revealed a gene that is linked to early hair loss, a Japanese researcher said today, sparking hopes for a treatment to prevent thinning and baldness in humans. The research team found that the absence of a gene known as Sox21 -- which it said is shared by humans and mice -- can lead to early hair loss. The scientists biologically engineered mice by blocking the gene and found that the rodents...

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY... DON'T CUT YOUR HAIR

A doctor claims his patients remain healthy because he does not cut his hair. The medic, 79, made the link between healing patients and not trimming his locks more than 60 years ago. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Peng Fu said: "I stopped cutting my hair and people started to get better." "My medicine became more effective the longer I let my hair grow. Now I will never cut it." The hirsute healer now has to carry his eight-pound mane rolled up in a bag on his back, according to the Austrian Times. It stretched nearly nine feet the last time...

Mites causing local squirrels to lose their hair

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM

WICHITA - You may have noticed them tiptoeing in branches of trees, along high lines or scampering across streets in front of cars: squirrels with receding hairlines. Increasing numbers of balding squirrels. In Wichita. And Salina. And wherever there are large populations of squirrels. The hairlines are the start of the classic symptoms of notoedric mange, said Charlie Cope, wildlife biologist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in Wichita. The animal first experiences hair loss over the chest and shoulders, Cope said. The mange then eventually spreads over the entire body, causing the animal to become nearly bald....

German firm 'used hair from Auschwitz to make car parts'

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM

One of the pillars of German industry, the giant but debt-crippled Schaeffler car parts supplier, was accused yesterday of using hair shorn from at least 40,000 Auschwitz death camp prisoners to make textiles at its factories in Nazi-occupied Poland during the Second World War. The highly disturbing allegations were contained in new evidence unearthed by Polish historians at the Auschwitz museum, who said they had found rolls of fabric made from camp inmates' hair at a former Schaeffler factory in Poland's southern region of Silesia. The discovery was the latest in a series of damaging blows for the ailing Schaeffler...

Rapid greying of Obama's hair raises the question: Can stress turn hair grey?

Thursday 18th of March 2010 03:44:01 AM
Posted by admin / Under Hair Jewelry

TORONTO - Barack Obama appears to come by his nickname honestly. Despite stepping into the U.S. presidency at perhaps the most difficult juncture in decades, No Drama Obama seems as unruffled - and as youthful - now as he did nearly two years ago when he announced he was seeking the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Except, that is, for the small matter of his hair. Since last summer, Obama's once jet-black hair has gone grey at a startling clip.
